CareerCast.com published a very interesting report regarding the 10 best jobs in America of 2010. If you are trying to figure out what career to pursue, one of the best things you can do is learn what jobs are in demand.

I really love these best jobs lists. Not only do they provide a snapshot view of job demand, but they also give insights into the future of our economy.

Another great thing about the CareerCast.com report is that it does not just measure hiring opportunities. Instead it looks at all of the following:

physical demands

work environment

income

stress

hiring outlook

I love the following statement from CareerCast.com,

top careers in the Jobs Rated report typically don't stand out as the most glamorous, highest paying or most noble. Instead, they are the jobs that offer the greatest chance of enjoying a combination of good health, low stress, a pleasant workplace, solid income and strong growth potential.

To me this seems like the perfect type of job to look for.

10 Best Jobs for 2010

1. Actuary

2. Software Engineer

3. Computer Systems Analyst

4. Biologist

5. Historian

6. Mathematician

7. Paralegal Assistant

8. Statistician

9. Accountant

10. Dental Hygienist

I was shocked to see an historian on the list. I did not realize that there was a lot of hiring opportunities in this field. But, that is the cool thing about lists like these - you learn about career opportunities that you never thought of before.

I encourage you to go read the actual report from CareerCast.com - Jobs Rated: The 10 Best Jobs of 2010. Also, if you want to read another list, I wrote an article last year about another jobs survey - Top 50 Jobs in United States.

Do you work in any of these jobs? If you do, please leave a comment and share your thoughts about your job.

Nobody!!

Today I read a story from Yahoo regarding the potential end of Terrell Owens' career. It is hard to believe that one of the NFL's most talented wide receivers is just not wanted by any teams anymore.

Is this because his talent has slipped? No!! It is because of his attitude.

No team in the NFL would say that Terrell Owens is not a good receiver. But, throughout his career his attitude has prevented him from becoming a star in the league. In fact, I would argue that his attitude has prevented him from becoming a valuable player for most teams.

So, why am I writing about football here on The Debt Hawk? Well, I think that reviewing Terrell Owens' career provides some great career advice.

Having a good attitude is the number one attribute that will get you ahead in your career.

Too many people make the mistake of believing that talent is what will get them ahead in their career, but these people are WRONG.

It is very rare that I see people promoted based upon their talent. In fact, most jobs only require a moderate level of talent. But, what sets apart those who get promotions from those who don't is ATTITUDE.

Nothing will get you ahead in your career like having a good attitude.

Terrell Owens was one of the best wide receivers when he was with the 49ers, Eagles and Cowboys. But, he never made his teammates better, won the confidence of his coaches or received the admiration of the fans. His attitude held him back from getting the long term contract that he always wanted.

So, pay attention to your attitude at work. Make sure that you help your coworkers and boss.

Don't complain all the time. If you don't like something at work, do something about it. Don't just talk about. People think that bringing up problems makes them look smart. But, while they might be right on in their anaylsis of the problem, people want solutions.

One thing that helps me to always display a positive attitude is to think about work being a performance. It is a very long play. Act the part of a great worker. If you try this trick, you will be amazed at how this changes how you work.

A person's career is his most important investment. This is the fuel for all other investments. Don't Terrell Owens your career.

It is pretty amazing that 20% of the top 50 jobs in the United States are health care related. If you are interested in health care, you can't go wrong with a job in this field. But, don't just go into a job because it is in demand. Make sure that you want to go into that field, like the types of work that particular job does, and understand the whether the job allows for the quality of life you are looking for.

What do you think about the jobs on the top 50 jobs in the United States list? I would love to hear your thoughts about them.

Even though the media talking heads are declaring the recession over, more and more Americans are losing their jobs every month. This is the second recession that I have been through as a member of the workforce, and boy I hate them. They are scary and hurt millions of people. But, you don't have to sit around and just worry. Start preparing for a layoff today by following these 10 ways to prepare for a layoff.

10 Ways To Prepare For A Layoff

1. Get Your Resume Ready - While this not new information, I do feel compelled to list this as step number 1 for you to do. Too often people miss out on job opportunities because they procrastinate on preparing their resumes. Whether you are looking for a job or not, you need to have your resume up-to-date. This will remove one of the biggest obstacles for applying for new jobs.

2. Network With Former Co-Workers - This is one of my favorite ways to network and it is great for finding a new job. When your co-workers leave your place of employment, keep in touch with them. These are the perfect people to help you to find a new job. They probably have a good feeling for the job market because they were recently looking to make a move, they are at a new company that might be a fit for you and they know the quality of your work.

3. Sign up for Linkedin.com - Of all of the social sites on the Internet, Linkedin.com is the best place for professional networking. Start working on your profile their. Make sure that you present yourself in a professional manner.

4. Starting Researching Online Job Search Engines- Online job search engines are a great way to find out about job openings. These search engines help to give you a broad picture of what types of jobs are in demand in your area. Also, if you are thinking about moving to a new place to live, these job search engines are very handy to see what jobs are available in your desired location. My favorite job search engine is Indeed.com.

5. Join Related Career Associations - Being an in-house attorney I belong to the Association of Corporate Counsel. This is an excellent organization for improving my legal skills and networking opportunities. But, better than the national Association of Corporate Counsel, I belong to my local chapter. This local chapter is a great way to network with other in-house corporate attorneys in my area. These local associations are great ways to hear about job opportunities within your profession in you local area.

6. Participate in Local Civic Organizations - Did you notice that I said participate and not just join? You need to participate in these organizations. Local civic organizations are great for helping you to get to know other people in your community. When looking for a job, everyone says it is who you know, not what you know. So, if that is the case, you need to get to know more people. So become and active member in your local Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Jaycees, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, etc.

7. Think Beyond Your Current Position - Do a little brainstorming regarding what other types of jobs you would like to do and whether you have the skills to perform that job. There is no better of a time to pursue a career change than when you have been laid off work. Maybe this is you opportunity to do something you are passionate about? Turn lemons into lemonade.

8. Take Advantage of Educational and Work Experience Opportunities - One of the best ways to obtain more education and experience is through your current job. My employer offers tons of opportunities for me to improve my skills and gain more experience. My employer pays for me to attend continuing legal education classes. These classes are great to learn new areas of the law. Someday, I would like to become a General Counsel of a corporation. I have a lot of experience in technology transactions, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, securities laws, and intellectual property issues. But, for me to become a General Counsel, I need to improve my knowledge and experience in litigation, bankruptcy, employment law, and antitrust matters. The best way for me to gain this knowledge and experience is through my current employer. Make sure you are taking advantage of the opportunities provided by your employer.

9. Read 48 Days to the Work You Love - 48 Days To The Work You Love is a great book to figure out what type of job you would like to do. Even if you love your current job, I think that you should read this book. I find it funny that people spend hours try to research the best investments for their savings, but spend almost no time thinking about their career. Your career is your number one investment. For most people, the vast majority of your income earned throughout your lifetime will come from your jobs. So, spend time researching how to make more money from your jobs. And, start by reading 48 Days To The Work You Love.

10. Focus on Improving Your Current Job Performance - The number one way to prepare for a layoff is to prevent it from happening to you. While you can't always avoid a layoff, in my experience great workers don't get laid off. So, focus on being the best at your job. Make yourself indispensable, have a great attitude and make your fellow co-workers jobs easier. This can be the best way to prepare for a layoff.
