How To Start Becoming Debt Free

by Hawk on July 17, 2009

How to start becoming debt free starts with the proper attitude.  Unless a person is serious about climbing out of debt, it will never happen.

Your attitude towards debt is what got you into your debt mess in the first place.  Now you need to change your relationship with debt.

Get Current On Your Bills

No matter how far in debt a person is, it is possible to get back into the black with the proper plan. The first part of the plan should be to control spending to below the current income level.  Once you are spending less than your expenses, you need to make sure that you are current with all of your bills.

No More Debt

Once you are current with all of your bills, you need to promise not to incur any more debt.  This is the attitude change you need to make.  No more debt.

Take Control of Your Spending

After promising yourself not to get into any more debt, you need to take control of your spending.  You need to start spending less of your money so that you can pay more off your debt and then save more.

Stop Using Credit Cards

A good way to control spending to place the credit cards in a safe place outside of your wallet. If you do not have the credit cards while shopping, there is no way to use them on impulse purchases.

Closing out credit card accounts is what some individuals think is best, but by keeping the accounts open, the longer credit history will be applied to a person’s credit rating and improve their score.

Just the Beginning of Becoming Debt Free

The above is just the beginning of becoming debt free.  To summarize, you need to get current on your current bills, stop accumulating new debt, and change your attitude with debt.  Dave Ramsey talks about paying off your debt with gazelle like intensity.  You will gain this intensity once you change your attitude towards debt.  Debt is your enemy and you need to treat it as such.

CUT YOUR CARDS UP!!!! If you’re in the mess its probably because of lack of discipline. Cut up Mr Visa. If you truly are in difficulty and you absolutely have to use, you can always order another one….
